Stafford MSD Board Orders Position-Based Trustee Elections

January 13, 2021 -- STAFFORD, Texas -- Elections for the Stafford Municipal School District Board of Trustees will be conducted by position, beginning with the election of two trustees in the upcoming May 1, 2021 general election.

The Board ordered the change to position-based elections by resolution at its meeting on January 11, 2021. Under the new position-based election method, the seven positions on the Board are designated by number, and candidates for trustee are voted on and elected separately for specific positions on the Board. A candidate will be designated on the official ballot according to the number of the position for which he or she seeks election.

To be elected, a candidate must receive more votes than any other candidate for the position. Each Trustee will continue to represent the entire District at large.

The new position-based election method represents a change from past elections, in which trustees were elected using the “at large” method of election. Under the “at large” election method, the candidates receiving the highest number of votes filled the positions up for election. For example, if three positions were up for election, the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes were elected.

SMSD Trustee Positions 1 and 2 are up for election in May 2021. Position 1 is currently held by SMSD Trustee Xavier Herrera, and Position 2 is currently held by SMSD Trustee Manuel Hinojosa.

SMSD Trustees will continue to serve for three-year terms. The terms of the two trustees elected in the May 1, 2021 general election will end in May 2024.

The Board’s resolution also designates the numbers of the remaining positions on the Board and the years during which they will be up for election, as follows: Position 3, up for election in May 2022 (currently held by SMSD Trustee Ash Hamirani); Position 4, up for election in May 2022 (currently held by SMSD Trustee Greg Holsapple); Position 5, up for election in May 2022 (currently held by SMSD Trustee Alicia Lacy-Castille); Position 6, up for election in May 2023 (currently held by SMSD Trustee Christopher Caldwell); and Position 7, up for election in May 2023 (currently held by SMSD Trustee Jacqueline Jean-Baptiste).
