Stafford Cross Country season to begin

The Stafford High Cross Country Program is ready for another season, under third-year head coach Angel Maldonado, a 2008 Stafford MSD graduate.

“The kids are working consistently to get in shape,” said Maldonado, noting that the teams will have new uniforms this season.

Both teams open the season on Saturday morning at the Pearland Dawson Meet. The Lady Spartans will look to qualify for Regionals, in Corpus Christi, for the second time in three seasons.

The teams will visit the Corpus Christi course for the Islander Splash Meet on Sept. 21, in order to prepare themselves for Regionals, which takes place on Oct. 28.

Stafford returns seven runners on each team. Johann Garcia and Chris Hughes are two of the leaders on the boys team, while Kasey Riascos and Jacquelyn Soto are two of the top runners on the girls team.

Several of the competitors also play soccer in the spring.

In addition to Dawson, Stafford also has meets at Brazoswood (Aug. 24), Bellville (Aug. 31) and Galveston (Sept. 6). They have a meet at Deer Park on Sept. 13 and Houston Baptist University on Oct. 3.
